Sandy RidgeLatest reports from Sandy Ridge Park Manager Tim Fairweather: Updated May 15, 2012: Good Morning, Had a great Big Birding Weekend. Lots of people and lots of birds. I had 71 species for my Big Sit on Saturday.
Highlights included:
-Aerial combat between two non-resident male eagles(talons locked!)
-Watching two bucks “kick-boxing” in the water
-Red-winged Blackbirds harassing a Red-tailed hawk-
![]() -The Willow Flycatcher that kept me company on the mound
Bird of the day: I was scanning the old orchard area for a Brown Thrasher, when something caught my eye. I zoomed the scope to almost max and there it was, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo from app. 750 feet away. Funny ending to the story; I was doing a perimeter check over there on Sunday, and the bird was right above me, might have been the same tree.
Thanks to all who sponsored me, and visited me on the mound. My species numbers were down from last year but it was a beautiful day, and I had a lot of support! Thanks again! (and a special thanks to Helen for the wickedly decadent custard and chocolate cannoli which powered me thru the day).
