Black River Reservation

Belted kingfishers, American woodcocks, wood ducks and indigo buntings-depending on the season. From Route 2, exit Route 254 west E. River/Gulf Road. Turn left 200 feet to Ford Road and to Bur Oak area, or turn right to 31st Street (1.5 miles) to Day’s Dam Area.

Caley National Wildlife Woods,
Wellington

Managed wetland habitat is popular with many types of waterfowl. Nearly all species of dabbling ducks migrate here during spring and fall. Ring-necked and bufflehead ducks and both scaup species, breeding marsh wrens, Virginia rails, soras and others; sightings of long-eared owls (winter) and sandhill cranes (early spring). From Route 2, exit south on Route 58. Follow 58 to Whitney Road and turn left. Turn right on West Road to park entrance (500 feet).

Findley State Park,
Wellington

Downy woodpeckers, blue jays, black-capped chickadees, tufted titmice and many other species are drawn to the park’s many bird feeders during cold months. Wood ducks, sharp-shinned hawks, yellow-billed cuckoos and rose-breasted grosbeaks also breed here. From Route 2, take Route 58 south 25 miles to park.

French Creek Nature Center
Sheffield Village

Woodland bird species includes common nesters such as Acadian flycatchers, scarlet tanagers, Cooper’s hawks and blue-gray gnatcatchers. Excellent, year-round night birding with great horned, barred and eastern screech owls. From Route 2, take Route 611 north two miles to park entrance on the left.

Lorain Harbor,
Lorain

Warm water attracts waterfowl throughout the year. The breakwater and jetties can reveal great blue and black-crowned herons, as well as purple sandpipers. Mallards and red-breasted mergansers are also likely to be seen. To East Pier, take Route 6 to Arizona Avenue north 500 feet to parking. To Municipal Pier, take Route 6 to Oberlin Avenue north 1,000 feet to pier.

Mill Hollow-Bacon Woods Memorial Park,
Vermilion

Amazing variety every season. Summer is a great time to spot cerulean and hooded warblers, yellow-throated and warbling vireos, wood thrushes and great crested flycatchers. Winter residents include pileated woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches, yellow-rumped warblers and Carolina wrens. From Route 2, exit Sunnyside/Vermilion Rd. Turn left on Vermilion Rd. and follow two miles to park.

Sandy Ridge Reservation
North Ridgeville

The marsh area of Sandy Ridge Reservation is a favorite of bird watchers. New species continue to appear and add to the breeding list of over 100 birds. Sand Hill Cranes, Egrets and American Bittern are regularly spotted in the summer months. From I-90, take Rt. 254 east to Case Rd., and turn right onto Case Rd. Take Case Rd. to Otten Rd.
