Kayaking. Lorain County offers kayaking for all skill levels. Kayaking on the Black River to Lake Erie offers spectacular scenery, birding and up-close views of the Lorain Lighthouse. From here you can kayak on Lake Erie, inside or outside the breakwall. For a calmer paddle, try Findley Lake at Findley State Park where you can rent kayaks, canoes and rowboats.

Road cycling. For a great aerobic challenge, complete the entire loop of the Back Roads and Beaches. You’ll get over 1000 feet of climbing while enjoying beautiful river crossings and rolling, rural roads.

Mountain biking. Try the 8+mile Thorn Mountain Biking Trail at Findley State Park with beautiful forested single track with options for beginners to expert.

Hiking. Cascade Park in Elyria features beautiful twin waterfalls that mark the union of the east and west branches of the Black River. Explore the shale cliffs and natural formations created by the retreat of the Wisconsin glacier over 12,000 years ago.

Lake Erie Recreation. Start your Lake Erie experience at the newly restored Lakeview Park and Beach in Lorain. One of Lake Erie’s most picturesque beaches, Lakeview is a great place to swim and sunbathe. Lakeview also hosts several triathlons and marathons.

Families with smaller children have the option of doing a smaller multi-sport adventure. Children can cycle the bike path in and around Oberlin. Combine with a swim at the Splash Zone, a bike tour highlighting the history of the area, including the Underground Railroad and a healthy meal stop at one of the eateries that cater to a health-conscious clientele.
