Visit Lorain County Announces Open Seats on Board of Directors

(Amherst, OH) July 9, 2010 - Visit Lorain County (Lorain County Visitors Bureau) currently has two open seats on its Board of Directors. Board members should have a strong interest in the positive promotion of tourism in Lorain County.

Visit Lorain County (VLC) is funded through a 3% bed tax levied on visitors to Lorain County hotels and motels. No local taxes support Visit Lorain County. Over 60 of Ohio’s 88 counties have visitors bureaus. Funding is made possible through a state law to invoke the lodging tax. By law, the county lodging tax is dedicated to a county-wide visitors bureau.

Formed in 1983 by the Lorain County Commissioners, the VLC mission is to increase tourism and its economic impact in Lorain County. In other words, tourism brings money into Lorain County and the VLC sees that Lorain County remains competitive in Ohio’s tourism marketplace.

A not-for-profit, destination marketing organization, Visit Lorain County works independently under the direction of the Board of Directors. Board membership consists of one Lorain County Commissioner, community leaders, travel industry professionals and sports industry leaders.

Board meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month at 8am. No meetings are held in July, August or December. The meetings last approximately one hour. Requirements for VLC Board membership include:

-Resident or employment in Lorain County

-Attendance requirement is 6 of 9 meetings during a fiscal year.

-Service on at least one of five standing committees.

-Must set aside personal and other business interest when making decisions on behalf of Visit Lorain County.
