The Lighthouse lovingly known as The Jewel of the Port®, will again be offering several tours to the Lighthouse, another event is Sunset Wine Dinners at the Lighthouse catered by Jackalope Restaurant.
The Lorain Lighthouse can only be reached by boat because of its location, thus tours and Sunset Wine Dinners both include an enjoyable boat ride.
The Lighthouse is a not-for-profit 501©3, all volunteer organization. Restoration has been done largely by this volunteer group. If you are interested in being a tour guide, doing general maintenance, painting, electrical, etc., we have a volunteer position for you. The lighthouse was due to be demolished in 1965 but through the efforts of a committee of local businessmen the campaign to save the Lighthouse began. It included school children collecting pennies(for a total of $6,500) to contribute to the effort. After many legal the Lighthouse became the property of the Lorain Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.(formally known as the Port of Lorain Foundation).
The fourth order Fresnel lens powered the beacon starting in 1932 but was removed when the Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1965. The lens was displayed in the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse in Rochester, NY until it returned to Lorain in 2013. It is presently on display in the Port Authority office, 319 Black River Lane, Lorain OH 44052.
