Klingshirn Winery is a third generation family farm winery in Avon Lake, Ohio. Established in 1935, Concord vineyards were the mainstay for the first fifty years. The first wines included Concord, Niagara and Pink Catawba.
Over the years as the winery grew, and the family grew, the vineyards grew as well.
In 1985, after Lee, the third generation and present owner and manager at Klingshirn Winery, graduated from The Ohio State University, he began planting wine grape varieties previously untested to the area. Not all of these grape varieties did well, but of those that did, including Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Franc and Vidal Blanc a new generation of estate produced wines were released. Currently, the vineyards are going through another transition. The Polar Vortex Winters of 2013-2015 were too much for the tender European varieties, and after six acres were frozen out, we have again replanted with new varieties. In a couple more years, we will see how well the cold hardy varieties Frontenac Gris, Prairie Star and Marquette will fair.
The winery is open year round. Though there is no hospitality room for seating, there is a tasting bar to assist the customer is selecting and tasting the wines for their greatest enjoyment. Weather permitting, outdoor seating is available and many folks enjoy bringing their own picnic baskets for a relaxing afternoon. During the fall, the harvest operation can be observed, including mechanical harvesting of the vineyards, crushing, pressing and fermenting of the juice into wine. Home wine makers have the opportunity of purchasing many of our fresh juices for their own wine production.
