Juneteenth or June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed.  In 2004, Oberlin City Council passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as an officially recognized day of commemoration and celebration for the City of Oberlin, Ohio.  The theme for Juneteenth Oberlin 2010 is :1860:  Oberlin on the Eve of War."  Friday's activities begin at 10:30am with an Oberlin in 1860 Trolley Tour, a children's book launch reception at noon, Westwood Cemetery Tour at 3:00 pm and Maafa Memorial Service at 6:30pm.  The Annual Juneteenth Festival on Tappan Square begins Saturday at 10am and ends with a concert by La Bamba  (Latin Jazz) from 5:30-7:30 pm.  The Festival will feature:  Parade, Vendors, Children's Bike Give-A-Ways, Mime & step dancing demonstrations, Greens & Cobbler Cook-Off Contest, Broom Jumping, Music by various local groups, Rock-Paper-Scissors Contest, Jump Rope Demonstration, Youth Karoake Contest, and 3 on 3 basketball tournament for 3rd-5th graders.  Oberlin History Trolley Tours 1pm, 2pm, 3pm.

The festival will also have a History Place featuring a costumed retelling of the story of Lee Howard Dobbins, a four-year-old child who escaped slavery and the courageous woman who brought him to Oberlin and other reenactments and debates around local and national events of 1860.
