As the saying goes, “In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ships1editocean blue.” But this year, his ships are gracing Lorain County with their presence! Two replicas of the famous Columbus ships, the Nina and the Pinta, are sailing right into the Black River Landing in Lorain!

On any given day, standing at the edge of the Mile Long Pier in Lorain provides a beautiful view of the Central Lake Erie coast that stretches on for miles, undisturbed. On one Thursday afternoon in August, however, my view changed.ships2edit

As I stood at the edge of the pier, camera in hand, I glimpsed the beautiful ships stretching and splashing over the horizon. The crowds around me gasped and cheered as the Nina and the Pinta lowered their sails and came cruising toward us. Beginning Friday, August 8th and docking until their departure on the morning of Tuesday, August 12th, the Nina and the Pinta, replicas of Columbus’ Ships, will open at Black River Landing in Lorain!

I was lucky enough to get a chance to check out the ships at Black River Landing on Thursday afternoon, and was completely taken aback by the size and beauty of the ships! What’s more impressive? The Nina was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools! Archaelogoy magazine even called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The Pinta is equally as impressive, being recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel.

It’s not just the outside of the ships that are breathtaking, it’s on deck that you really begin to feel a part of the history! After a quick word with the first mate, I was climbing on board the Pinta, marveling at the details in the woodwork and the massive ropes holding the sails. It was truly a beautiful sight, and I ate it up!

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour! Don’t miss this shot to climb aboard and back in time on the Nina and Pinta! Be sure to snap a picture and use the hash-tag #TallShipsLorain to be entered to win a Smitty’s gift card on us!
